Wilton History Festival
A small town with a big history
Wilton is a small town in Wiltshire. Its history is long and illustrious. In the early Middle Ages it bore an eminent position as the royal seat of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Wessex, where the town’s important abbey was established – the home of St. Edith of Wilton. As a volunteer, I worked with festival founder Dr Rebecca Lyons University of Bristol to create a simple brand and website for the festival.
The festival launced with no funding and no budget so everyone gave their time for free and we had to be resourceful in our use of free fonts, creative commons images, CMS, hosting platforms and marketing channels. Unfortunately this also meant that several of the designed assets were never realised.
The festival raised funds for local charity The Burnbake Trust who provide donated essential household goods, sometimes in emergency situations, to local people in need. These people are referred by Social Services, Age Concern, Women’s Refuge, SSAFA and other agencies.
We also raised money for the Churches Conservation Trust who maintain one of the festival venues Old St Mary's which marks the site of the original Wilton Abbey. The trust nominated the history festival for a National Volunteering Award in the Volunteer Team of the Year category.
